Wycliffe Big Head - Saturday 7th February 2009

About 4500m on the Gloucester Berkeley Canal

THE EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE WEATHER

10:30 Thursday 5th February 2009

After following the weather forecasts for the last five days and with 3in of snow around my house (and 2in around the Wycliffe boathouse), I have taken the hard decision to CANCEL the Wycliffe Big Head 2009.

I have taken this decision for several reasons:

1. Gloucestershire County Council is running out of grit and salt and are only clearing the major A roads and leaving all others. Having spoken to people around the boathouse the roads are dangerous.

2. More snow is forecast both today and tomorrow, and this will not disappear by Saturday.

3. I am not able to get the equipment (Toilets, planks etc) in to site and safety set it all up.

3. The low temperatures forecast for Saturday will make the marshalling at the start, more of a concern. Although I send instructions to all clubs about the dress code that I expect, junior crews will be marshalling for nearly an hour.

4. The canal banks and car parks will be very slippery for all spectators.

I have left this decision as long as possible, but I wanted to give clubs and schools time to make other arrangements. Over the next week I will send out full refund cheques to all clubs and schools.

Thank you for your support of the event and I hope to see you on December 5th 2009 at the Wycliffe Small Boats Head.

Enjoy a snowball fight or sledging on the Hills.

Phil Clements
Chairman, Wycliffe Heads
